Baofeng UV-5R has SMA male connector on the radio for connecting to the antenna. This requires the antenna or coax to have a SMA female connector.

Go to NOAA to find a NWR station to listen to.

WXL96 in Salem, OR is a strong station based on past experience.

UV-5R operation

• Turn on UV-5R with the volume control.
• Use A/B button to select top frequency.
• Enter 162.475 with the keypad.
• Position UV-5R for best signal. Notice how the signal strength level indicator changes.
• Rotating the UV-5R horizontal, the signal strength decrease.
• This is a good example of vertical and horizontal signal polarization.
• The this case vertical antenna polarization was best.

Notes

• Antenna: Standard UV-5R antenna used (antenna is sometimes called rubber ducky).
• Location: Ham shack in the house, UV-5R on the desk, a change in UV-5R make significant difference in received signal. two feet
• Antenna polarization: vertical polarization was best.
• This was first power-on, no changes to squelch level and other settings from the factory.
• YouTube video was created with an iPhone and iMovie.

The distance to WXL96 is 66.9 miles.

The below Google Earth elevation profile shows a clear signal path above the valley floor.
Note, the elevation profile is reverse from the red map line. In other words, left side is WA9ONY and the right side is WXL96.

This is a good example of VHF line-of-sigh communications.
