Nikon Coolpix 990 Digital Camera has image resolution of 2048 x 1536 with 8-24mm lens. The advantages and disadvantages of using Nikon Coolpix 990 for astrophotography.

Starting in December 2002 the Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera was afocal coupled directly to an Eyepiece/Adapter. Before the Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera was afocal coupled to the telescope using using an universal camera adapter. In afocal coupling the Coolpix 990 was aimed into the telescope eyepiece because the Nikon 990 lense can not be removed. Afocal Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera setups I have used include:

• Orion Telescopes & Binoculars ShortTube™ achromatic 80mm aperture rich-field refractor configuration. Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera images taken with the 80mm telescope.
   
• Orion Telescopes & Binoculars Argonaut™ 150mm Maksutov-Cassegrain configuration. Nikon Coolpix 990 digital camera images taken with the 150mm telescope.

Using the Nikon Coolpix 990 with a tripod reduces camera vibrations and is simple to do. Coolpix 990 accepts optional lenses including Fisheye, Wide-Angle, 2X and 3X Telephotos.

A photograph of the Sun's projected image on white cardboard using a 400mm telephoto lense and a 10mm eyepiece of the partical solar eclipse on July 30, 2000 was taken with the Nikon Coolpix 990.
