Jupiter sketch, Sept. 17, 1998
Sketch made from about 0420-0451 UT, basing features on their positions
at 0430 (9:30 pm PST Sept 16), as seen through TeleVue Pronto working at
126x (3.8mm Ultrascopic eyepiece). Image is mirror-reversed, so that
north is up and west to the left. I was working in the dark, so I
got the belts tilted with respect to the poles. The Great Red Spot
looked white, and it was outlined by the Red Spot Hollow. There were
two big light ovals immediately following (seen to the right of) the GRS.
Surprisingly, the South Equatorial Belt lightened at the limb. I
think I drew the GRS too round.
The RASC Handbook shows that Callisto (shown near the north pole) disappeared
into eclipse at 0431. But it was so close to the planet that it is
surprising that the reappearance would be from eclipse rather than from
occultation.
