Girl Scout Troop 135

March 10, 2001
We were pleased to have Girl Scout Troop 135 show up for an introduction to the Astronomical Universe and an evening of star gazing.  Ed Harfmann and Steven Lichti started the evening with a quick introduction to the Purdue 16" telescope.  The girls were a bit cold, but we thought it was a bit balmy at 30 degrees!

Once Ed remembered how the telescope worked, he turned it towards Venus.

The girls were quite patient while the telescope was being setup.

Once ready, the girls were able to view Venus.  Venus was very big and bright throught the eyepiece.  A beautiful sliver that reminded many of looking at the moon.

After a slide show introduction to the Universe, we also viewed Jupiter.  Although enough clouds rolled in to give Jupiter a halo, it still had several bands visible.

We enjoyed showing the universe to them for the evening.  Hopefully, the view inspired some to keep looking up!
